In October 2015, a Mumbai-based lawyer, Afroz Shah started an ambitious project, that would eventually be lauded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was also awarded ‘Champions of the Earth’ by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)
The project: Cleaning of Versova Beach, the first of many such projects or drives running in Mumbai.

All because Afroz Shah was tired of complaining to the local authorities and was unhappy with this non existent beach. Finally, he took it upon himself to start cleaning the beach, completing the task in a whopping 85 weeks!
Over the course of time, other people joined him in his conquest too. He, along with the Versova Residence Volunteers or VRV, would come together over the weekends; pool the garbage, and place it near points where the municipal corporation (BMC) would collect them.
This is a prime example of “Little drops make the mighty ocean”.
